From Mine to Lab: Where Will Diamonds Go From Here?

Loose Diamonds iStock 000016706134 SquareThe growing availability of lab-grown diamonds and their expanding appeal—especially to the Millennial market—has led to new questions about the future of the diamond industry. How will mined and synthetic diamonds co-exist? Do synthetics pose a threat to natural diamonds, and do they raise the threat of disclosure problems? This panel discussion will explore the changing facets of the diamond market. Get Inspired! 25 Years of Designs from AJDC

We talk a lot about the business of jewelry, art, and design at MentorWerx. But we never forget for one moment that the heart of the business is the creativity, the solitary artist contemplating his or her materials, thoughtfully expressing their vision in multiple dimensions. So we think it's important to also bring to you books and experiences that enrich your creativve self.

The American Jewelry Design Council (AJDC) is currently doing an exhibition at the Gemological Institute of America (Carlsbad, CA), called "Variations on a Theme: 25 Years of Designs from the AJDC." Open to the public, the exhibition has recently been extended through March 17, 2017.

The exhibition features a selection of works from various annual AJDC Design Projects from the very first theme, in 1996 to 2013. Annually, the council asks each of its members to create a design project, interpreting a single concept or theme; the final product is a collection of unique jewelry pieces joined by a solitary concept. Past themes include simple conceptual elements such as “Water”, “Spiral”, “Ice”, and “Flight” imagined into breathtaking masterpieces made of precious metals, gemstones and unexpected materials.

If you can't go see the work in person — and even if you can! — we think the exhibition catalog is something everyone should own. The catalog is a visual delight, filled with rich imagery of the AJDC works. It's also a tactile delight! From the heavy weight of the paper to the texture of the pages, once you open the catalog you will be immersed in the exploration of design.

You can order your copy directly from the AJDC for $24.99 plus $6 shipping (it's heavy!!). Give yourself (or someone you love!) the gift of inspiration, while providing support to an incredible organization. Trust us - you won't be able to put it down!

Casting Facility and Workshop Tour

Cindy Edelstein originated these workshop tours many years ago, and we want to continue the tradition in her honor and for your benefit.

Andrea Hill and Raymond Hakimi will take you on an MJSA-sponsored tour of Carrera Casting in the jewelry district in Manhattan. This is an opportunity to gain insight about outsourcing your jewelry designs to manufacturing partners. Throughout the tour we will answer all your production questions.

The Big Pitch

This event was created by Cindy Edelstein several years ago to get designers in front of retailers. Designers pitch their collection to a panel of retailers and editors, as well as answer questions that give retail buyers insight into each designer's creative process. You are invited to come observe and learn from your designer peers and the retailers you want to sell to!

We know it's hard to be in business for yourself, and we believe we can make it just a bit easier by providing events and opportunities like these. The more you learn, the better you will be at running your business! And when you learn in the company of a vibrant and sharing community, it's that much better. See you in New York!
